PREVENTION OF BIRTH DEFECTS

Primary prevention of some birth defects is possible today because several known risk factors are well established, including lack of folic acid use, exposure to certain medications, smoking and diabetes.

However, translating this knowledge into effective international strategies for prevention has been hampered by several factors, including the scarcity of well-documented evidence on the distribution and impact of such risk factors, as well as the limited discussion and dissemination of current health policies and prevention strategies among policy makers.
